Rosa canina (up to 400 cm) Dog rose Tall rose with arching stems and curved prickles. Pale pink or white fragrant flowers (30-60 mm) present from June to July on hairless stalks. Dark green leaves. Rosa pimpinellifolia (up to 30 cm) Burnet rose Low sprawling patch-forming rose. Creamy white fragrant flowers (200-400 mm) present from May to July. Leaves have 7-9 round leaflets. Rosa tomentosa (???? cm) Southern downy rose Climbing rose with deep pink flowers on long stalks. Greyish-green leaves that are downy beneath. Red hips have downturned sepals. Found in hedgerows. Image taken at River Avon, Salisbury, Wiltshire .
Rubus fruticosus (up to 400 cm) Bramble Prickly clambering rose. White or pink flowers (20-32 mm) from May to November. Toothed leaves have three leaflets. Fruit is known as the blackberry and turns from green to red then black as it ripens. Widespread and common. Found in woods, scrub, hedgerows, cliffs, dunes and waste ground. Fragaria vesca (up to 30 cm) Wild strawberry Short hairy rooting plant. White flower (12-18 mm) with no gaps between the five unnotched petals. Flowers from April to July. Trefoil leaves. Potentilla sterilis (up to 15 cm) Barren strawberry Short hairy rooting plant. Smaller than Wild strawberry with gaps between the petals. White flowers with slightly notched petals. Geum rivale (up to 50 cm) Water avens Bell-shaped flowers consisting of five pale pink petals with dark purple sepals (10-18 mm) in a nodding head. Flowers from April to September. Basal leaves are pinnate whilst those on the stem are trefoil. Fruits are hooked in a head resembling a bur fruit. Found in damp woods and marshes. Sorbus acuparia (up to 18 m) Rowan (Mountain ash) Alternate pinnate leaves with lanceolate leaflets that are toothed and hairy on the underside. White flowers (8-10 mm). Red berries (6-9 mm) Found in woods, moors and acidic heaths. Widespread and common. Image taken at Silverdale, Lancashire .
Prunus spinosa (up to 4 m) Blackthorn Stiff thorny thicket forming shrub. White flowers (10-15 mm) appear before the leaves from late March to May (i.e. before Hawthorn). Oval leaves. Crataegus monogyna (up to 15 m) Hawthorn Stiff thorny thicket forming shrub. White five-petalled fragrant flowers (8-15 mm) from late April to June. Rubus idaeus (up to 200 cm) Raspberry Weakly prickly rose. Dull white drooping flowers (9-11 mm) from May to August. Trefoil leaves that are downy white underneath.Red fruit is known as the raspberry and easily comes off as it ripens. Widespread and common. Found in woods, scrub and heaths.
